Digital Humanities Research Group

Die Arbeitsgruppe Digital Humanities wurde vom Department Informatik anlässlich der Versetzung von Prof. Dr.-ing. Günther Görz in den Ruhestand zum 1.10.2012 eingerichtet. In ihr sollen Forschungsprojekte im Schnittbereich von Informatik und Geisteswissenschaften durchgeführt werden, insbesondere solche, die bereits an der Professur für Künstliche Intelligenz initiiert worden waren.

Die Professur für Künstliche Intelligenz wird als Professur für Kognitive Systeme weitergeführt und soll im Jahr 2014 neu besetzt werden. Der frühere Lehrstuhl für Künstliche Intelligenz existiert nicht mehr als eigener Lehrstuhl, sondern wurde auf Beschluss des Departments mit dem Lehrstuhl für Theoretische Informatik fusioniert, den Prof. Dr. Lutz Schröder seit dem Sommersemester 2012 innehat. Um die Vorgeschichte zu dokumentieren, sind an dieser Stelle auch die alten Seiten der Professur KI abgelegt.

Textmining & Information Extraction:

While classical techniques heavily rely on statistical approaches, i try to enrich these by incorporating external knowledge like morphological features, ontologies (GermaNet) and domain-specific heurisitics. Web Content Mining:

Web Mining is all about analyzing Web Pages (and therefore bombing Google). While it is sometimes quite hard to find good sites with a search engine, it is even more of a problem to let the computer extract relevant information from it, cause of the massive amount of irrelevant parts of websites like navigation panels, ads, headers and footers or link-farm like structures. We developed a filter mechanism for those unwanted parts implemented in Java. It finds content-rich parts of a website by analyzing linked pages of the same domain to identify static parts of a set of websites that usually hold no content. You can download SBFilter here. This project was realised as a Studienarbeit, get it here (only available in German, the source code is documented in English).


I am currently involved in FORSIP (Bavarian Research Cooperation for Situated, Individualized and Personalized Human-Computer Interaction). Associated with the project Trustee2, we build an shopping advisory system, that uses no classical AI knowledge base to support decision-making, but on-the-fly knowledge extraction off the internet.
